KOTAROU I HOPE YOU SEE THIS.

My friend Kotarou said that this was kind of beautiful. No. No it is not at all. I live in the affected area (Virginia) and the arrival of a large brood of cicadas is like the coming of a plague. Let me describe it for you.

Step 1: They emerge. Every tree is covered with their discarded shells as they shed their old skins and prepare for weeks of mass orgies. At this point their old shells also cover the ground around trees, and it was so bad for me last time it happened that you could not see the mulch around the base of trees in my yard because there was a solid layer of cicada shells on top.

Step 2: Cicadas everywhere. They are flying everywhere and get stuck in your hair, your hoodie, you name it. Their buzzing sounds like an alien spaceship is coming. Normally their buzzing is cool, but when there are bajillions of cicadas it becomes a frightening rip-roar.

Step 3: Cicadas laying eggs everywhere. In order to lay eggs cicadas slit eggs in branches and fill them with their love capsules. The branches then die and fall to the ground, where the baby cicadas enter the earth and wait for their time to emerge. Tree carnage is everywhere and it is a sad sight. It is honestly really really bad and so most people who care about their trees wrap up the branches in netting so the cicadas can lay eggs on them.

Step 4: Dying cicadas everywhere. Ok. So get this. After female cicadas lay their eggs they lose the lower half of their bodies and then they just keep walking around like that until they freaking die. Not sure when the boys die, but ugh, they all die eventually and then the smell comes. For a good two weeks their is the putrid stank of rotting cicadas in the air. Also, there will be spots of sidewalk/road/yard that you literally cannot cross without stepping on dead and rotting cicadas because they are all dying all at once and there’s no stopping it. We tried power-washing my driveway to get rid of them, but if my dad washed them away in the morning before going to work it would already be covered again when I got back from school. I had to suck it up and live with shoes that were constantly covered in cicada guts on the bottom until the nightmare was over.

Not beautiful.

I am not exaggerating it is actually this horrible if not worse.
